Debunking myths series -part 2
GREEETINGS
TO ALL MY DEAR READERS AND VIEWERS…
Let’s begin
with the part 2 Busting myths in lieu of dental care. Many misconceptions and misinformations spread through word of mouth or by the social media and many other sources.
It's important to emphasize on the facts rather than believing the misinformation for out benefit and making the Dental care the PRIORITY.
Introduction.
In
continuation with the series 1 of Debunking myths in lieu of DENTAL CARE .
Dental care
plays a vital role for the overall well-being.
These
misconceptions or myths lead to confusion and potentially harmful practices.
Based
on substantial facts and evidence-based information based on time to time
evaluation or researches happeni g in the field of conventional and modern
DENTISTRY can put a positive impact o the oral health rather than affecting following
the misconceptions spread or hovering via
the social media handles.
Let’s
take up the myths considered reluctantly or imbibed in our minds one by one with associated facts.
Tooth
loss is genetic/dental health of the teeth is predetermined by genetics-
It’s not
genetic and is preventable by religiously following the oral hygiene
regimen-includes flossing ,brushing and regular visits to the dentist.
In this way
you can enjoy your pearly whites throughout life with no hassles,or infections
or just inflammation that set in when not being a avid follower of the oral
hygiene regimen.
It's not
connected to your general health.
It’s very
much the impression of your Systemic morbidities or causes underlying along with
the medication being consumed.
DO INVEST
IN YOUR GENERAL HEALTH TOO.IT MORE OR LESS OUTS A VISIBLE IMPACT ON YOUR ORAL
HEALTH WELLNESS.
Brushing
Harder Means Cleaner Teeth.
Hard/harsh/aggressive
brushing can result in wearing of the teeth (teeth wear and tear) by the hard
bristles of the brush used.
Causes
sensitivity and discoloration as well.
Time
doesn’t matter at what time are you choosing for the brushing.
Time of
brushing is crucial for brushing before sleep importantantly as it removes all
the sugars and stuck food that can be lead to overnight breeding of the
bacteria causing cavities. Cavities further can cause or crop -up with more and
more complex dental issues.
Treatment
becomes difficult at time restoring the loss as it can further propagate to lss
of teeth as well in case if grave negligence.
CHEWING
GUM IS EXACTLY the SAME as brushing but not to be mistaken..
Chewing gums
are not replacement to brushing.
They can
help stimulate the saliva production and remove the bacteria but can ot remove
the sticky biofilms attaching the teeth surfaces.
Brushing
teeth before going in for the dental treatment or maintenance of dental hygiene by hygienist.
This is not
the case as you cannot run away from the actual condition visible and also will
not hide the bad condition of the teeth in the last 6 months if been ignored.
Crowns and
fillings (restoration) is a permanent solution to the teeth for rest of the life
or in the coming future.
NO… IT’S
NOT THE FOREVER SOLUTION AS RECURRANCE MAYCAUSE LONG- LASTING B CONSEQUENCES ON
THE TEETH BEEN RESTORED.
RREGULAR
CHECK-UP is must .
Can’t be taken
lightly
Dental
X-rays are dangerous.
Dental
x-rays are not dangerous are very safe
in very low radiation.
Dental
X-rays are very beneficial to detect the mild to severe issue that start
initiating in the hard and soft tissues.
Dental
visits to be avoided during PREGNANCY.
Dental
visits should be undertaken during PREGNANCY.
Pregnancy
-induced gingival inflammation during at some point of time.
So that
very normal not to worry at all.
Regular
check-ups and cleanings can be done and apart from that restorations and emergencies
can be entertained.
But complex
procedures to be avoided.
Visiting
the dentist only after having problem.
But here
you need to be clear that regular dental check-ups very much required without
fail even if not having a slightest of the dental issue cropping-up..and keep
waiting until it troubles you.
To avoid
unnecessary discomfort is advisable.
Later the
negligence cost will have to be paid by you.
Teeth
whitening can damage(straps the top layer -ENAMEL) your teeth.
Not at all
in case of professional cleaning rather than home cleaning.
Go in for advanced procedures available and enjoy your beautiful smiles.
Primary
teeth not to be preserved as they are not important as Permanent teeth.
Take out
this kind of an outlook as it can affect your Permanent teeth buds arising
underneath the deciduous or baby teeth in terms of infection going down
enormously.
Later it
can Mar the confidence of the growing child .
So..
Need to be
very cautious.
Bleeding
gums are normal.
Bleeding
gums are to be taken seriously as it can affect the anchorage of the teeth in
and around the sockets.
So here we
need to very alert that the gu infection should not reach the advanced gingivitis stage also
called periodontitis causing the teeth to fall.
Flossing
is not necessary.
Flossing is
equally necessary as it take out the foid debris hidden deep around and between
the adjacent teeth to prevent the slow and progressive decay.
Flossing
regimen to be followed religiously.
Natural
sugars cannot harm your teeth.
Here again
the pre-conceived notions inculcated in our minds that natural fruit sugars
will not cause any harm to the teeth. But it’s the otherr way round.Bacteria cannot
differentiate between the natural and the artificial/refined/processed sugars.
SO WHENEVER
WE CONSUME SUGARS ,WE NEED TO RINSE .
MAKE IT A
HABIT.
You
should use an alcohol-based mouth wash.
Alcohol -based
mouthwash can change the ecological basis of the oral MICROBIOME.
As alcohol
cannot differentiate between the good and bad bacteria l or oral flora .So it
will wash out everything. Can lead to ulcers, cancer, ruin cavity fillings etc.
Sugars
responsible for the CAVITIES.
BUT NO…
SUGARS
ALONE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOT THE OCCURANCE OF THE CAVITIES. CARBOHYDRATES THAT
WE CONSUME CAN CAUSE CAVITIES as they ate finally broken down into sugars.
White
teeth are healthy teeth-
WHITE TEETH
ARE HEALTHY TEETH.IT’S NOT TRUE.Change in color can happen due to numerous
factors like genetics, food and drinks, aging and unhealthy habits like smoking ,certain
medications etc.
But yes you
can go for teeth whitening procedures.(but only Professional cleaning).
If the
teeth are sensitive, that doesn’t mean that teeth are worn -off .But that’s not
the case.Many factors can cause
sensitivity like gum disease, cavities ,systemic factors like GERD ,Acid reflux
etc.
Poor
oral health doesn’t affect the systemic health.
Compromised
ORAL health surely affects all your Systems like respiratory(lung) cardiac(heart),neurological
factors like dementia(ALZHEIMER’Sdisease),strokes, chronic diseases like
diabetes, Hypertension, low birth weight babies, cancerous condition related to
stomach, pancreas ,lung, kidney etc.Be vigilent about your ORAL health wellness and
in turn controlling the systemic complications further.
Gum
disease only affects your ORAL health exclusively.
Gum
inflammation affects the systemic health by the dissemination of the oral
bacteria to the heart via blood stream affecting the heart largely(cardiovascular
system) and can be carcinogenic causing cancer too.
Diet
drinks are healthy choice for the overall oral health.
Diet drinks
less in sugars are more acidic causing demineralization(stripping/erosion)of the
enamel causing SENSITIVITY.Plus can cause cavities etc.
Tooth
damaging beverages to be consumed in Moderation to reduce the consequences in
lieu of oral health.
Oil
pulling helps your dental health.
There is no
scientific research that oil pulling has been beneficial.
You should
rinse immediately after rinsing.
Delayed
rinsing post brushing to attain optimal results.Immediate rinsing can inadvertently
awayes away the flouride present in the tooth pastes that acts as a shield preventing
cavities to happen
Atleast 30
min pause requires to enhance the protective magic of the flouride working on
the tooth surfaces.
All
tooth paste is the same.
Choosing
the right toothpaste is the key
Range of
toothpaste available in the markrt that addresses .distinct oral health issues or
needs like sensitivity relief ,tartar control, teeth whitening etc.
It's
important to have a conversation with your dentist to help you choose an
appropriate tooth paste to treat your dental issue appropriately.
Sparkling
water is good for me /my teeth.
Sparkling
water is best to maintain the healthy teeth than the carbonated beveissuesare
quite acidic lead to serious decay. To limit the decay..use straw or drink fast
following having eater thereafter.
Dental
cleaning leads to sensitivity.
Prolonged
deposition of calculus and plaque lead to exposure of the roots of the teeth.
Roots are
sensitive to beverages, food and even air.
Temporary
sensitivity happens after or post removal of calculus(tartar) from the teeth
which subsides in a day or two.
So in that
case anti-sensitivity tooth paste are recommended for the same by the dentist.
Dental
cleaning (scaling/prophylaxis) leads to Loosening of the teeth.
Scaling doesn’t leads to Loosening of yhe teeth.MOBILE
TEETH ARE consequences of the Periodontitis(advanced gingivitis) which damages
the gums and the supporting tissues.
Regular
dental check-ups can prevent both gingivitis and the advanced gingivitis and scaling sessions
every 6 months.
An
infant’s mouth should not be cleaned as mouth don’t have teeth.
Cleaning the
infant’s mouth necessary to ensure that no residual BREAST milk remains after
feeding sessions.
To prevent
the bacterial build-up,the cleaning should be done using damp-gauze gauze
piece.
Brushing
is not needed for the toddler untill the age of 4 or 5 years.
Deciduous
teeth start erupting from the age of 6 months.
Brushing
milk teeth without tooth paste post bottle feeding can lead to breeding of the
bacteria. They use the sugar and convert it into acids leading to
demineralization of the tooth surfaces causing cavities or caries ( known as
BABY BOTTLE CARIES/NUESING BOTTLE CARIES IN THE TODDLERS).
Eyesight
is hampered when tooth is extracted or removed from the upper jaw(maxilla).
There is no
relationship between the upper teeth and the vision doesn’t get affected by the
removal of the teeth/tooth.
Whitening teeth means weakening the teeth.
Stains
causing food and beverages and the age
factor influences the aesthetics of the teeth.
In that
case tooth whitening procedures should be employed just to restore pearly
whites.
Zoom teeth
whitening(uses bleaching agents-hydrogen peroxide)and laser teeth whitening(uses
bleaching gel) dentistry is in now a days and that too being a professional
procedure to enhance the whiteness of the teeth in a way teeth become
presentable.
Not at all
harmful but the history should be given to the doctor beforehand in a clear
manner.

all true..taking the sugar -laden drinks and beverages in moderate amounts alongwith
following the oral hygiene regimen religiously.
Is
flouride toothpaste good for the toddler.
Flouride is
good in any way but not to be used before 6 months but thereafter can be a
gamechanger promoting the remineralization of the teeth enamel.
Quantities
of flouride in the water or the toothpaste to be at your doctor’s discretion in
order to prevent the toxicity.
Within
limits it prevents decay, strength the enamel and prevents tooth loss.
Aspirin
kept against the tooth vacant ease out the pain.
Aspirin is
acidic, burn your gum tissue. So kindly talk to your dentist for the same forvan
appropriate dose to be consumed or ingested and can act as a painkiller or
antibiotics in case of infection.
You can
detect the cavity on your own.
Its only
visible with the naked eye if gross infection or may be at risk for the
abscess,cavity, or root canal.
In case if
initial onset of sensitivity to mild pain can be detected by the x-ray for the
early start of the treatment to prevent
further spread or complications.
Brushing
more than once can spoil your teeth.
Brushing
twice can prevent calculus deposition around the teeth preventing gingivitis
and advanced gingivitis.
Flouride
toothpaste can remineralize your enamel and make it stronger and use of soft-
tooth brush can prevent the same from happening.
Removing
a teeth is better than having a root canal.
People
think of removing the tooth than to save the tooth.
Now a
days..significant advancements happening in the field of Cosmetic dentistry.
Helps to
restore the aesthetics and function keeping the Natual entity intact.
People
will notice a dental implants.
Dental
implants are another advanced procedure to correct the missing teeth or tooth. They
imitate the natural tooth color and translucency.
It’s
unlikely that people around can distinguish between the implants and the
natural tooth or teeth.
They blend
with the natural tooth being BIOCOMPATIBLE with the oral and hard tissues.
Dental
bridges are prone to falling out easily.
Dental
bridges are designed to be durable and permanent so far as it should be cleaned
around the margins for RECURRANCE of

as an illusion causing that its make the teeth very bright.
In
reality..nothing happens but it’s just the causes teeth wear and tear
Getting
wisdom teeth pulled is needed to prevent crowding.
It’s not
necessary that it causes crowding.
Many
factors are involved which lead to crowding of the teeth.
Proper
examination and evaluation important.
Removal is
required in case of impaction, less jaw space, carious tooth that needs removal.
If not
causing any problem, then no need to take out the wisdom tooth.
Listerine
causes cancer.
Never
mouthwashes cause carcinogenicity.
It’s your
alcohol-based mouthwash not responsible
for cancer but your oral hygiene negligence is the main issue that needs to be
corrected.
Suggestions
to be taken from your concerned treating doctor for appropriate selection for
the same.

And to make
the procedure comfortable so far.
