This time I have pen down the dental and medical emergencies that can happen in the dental clinic/hospital.

Let’s learn about what are the emergencies linked with the DENTAL ISSUES.

WHEN ANY EMERGENCY HAPPENS??

Let's understand difference between EMERGENCY AND URGENCY.

Emergency:-  Refers to serious and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action without  fail. 

Urgency:-   Refers to the condition needing immediate action or attention not right away but to be entertained surely after a while.

LOOK FOR /RUSH TO THE EMERGENCY SERVICE:- 

Emergency room in any HOSPITAL or POLYCLINIC can only treat pain or stop the bleeding if happens.

Then they will refer you to the dentist concerned depending upon the dental issue for the proper treatment or else you can visit your own family doctor for the same.

So readers , here you  need to understand why regular check -ups are necessary to avoid for any  future impending problems that can pose in  the near future. 

DOCTORS TREATING THE CONCERNED PATIENTS WILL UNDERSTAND YOUR PROBLEM BETTER IN AN ORGANIZED MANNER AS THEY ARE WELL VERSED WITH THEIR HISTORY (including the underlying chronic issues and medications for the same).

A) Sudden excruciating toothache or tooth pain or dull ache (INTENSITY OF PAIN DECIDES WHETHER IT IS AN EMERGENCY OR NOT).

 -Change in the ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE-either flying(LOW PRESSURE)or deep sea diving(HIGH PRESSURE) or many other dental issues resulting in pain degree to be considered immediately. 

B) Traumatic injury(BLEEDING AROUND SOFT TISSUE AND HARD TISSUE STRUCTURES) to single or multiple teeth while playing sports OR accidental injuries..(BROKEN/FRACTURED JAWS).

C) Soft tissue injury( tongue ,gums ,palate and cheek) owing to faulty dentures/FILLINGS. More importantly it can happen during the ongoing drilling with the Air rotor or the drilling machine

D) Ongoing CORRECTIVE treatment like orthodontic treatment (BRACING/WIRING-broken braces or wires) and also DEFECTIVE FILLINGS(RESTORATION)-overhangs (excess FILLINGS or High Occlusal points).

And also NOTE, it can happen in case of treatment recently given like after FILLINGS(RESTORATION)or RCT or any restorative appliance or prosthesis given causing DISCOMFORT).

E) SENSITIVITY OF TEETH IS COMMON BUT PATIENTS BECOME APPREHENSIVE MOSTLY  -CAN BE TEMPERORY OR PERMANENT (SEEK DENTAL ADVICE POSITIVELY).

F) Cracked tooth/fractured tooth/chipped/ tooth-TOOTH ADVERSITY.

G) Dislocated DISPLACED tooth/TEETH (LOOSE/KNOCKED OUT TEETH).

H) Discharge of Pus(Abscessed gums can be whitish ,red ,clear,yellowish pimple on the gums and around the tooth(ABSCESS FORMATION).

I) Inflammation(SWELLING) in the gums(GINGIVITIS) owing to underlying systemic disorder or any foreign injury(localized/generalized).

J) Artificial prosthesis get dislocated/displaced owing to any of the  reason(FIXED OR REMOVABLEPROSTHESIS).

K) RESTORATION (FILLINGS Displaced/broken/ missing).

 

WHAT TO BE DONE IN THE MEANTIME:-

Emergencies can reflect in any way-

CATEGORIZATION DEPENDING UPON THE URGENCY AND EMERGENCY:-

FUNCTIONAL EMERGENCY-EXTERNAL TRAUMA,PHYSIOLOGICAL, ENDOCRINAL(HORMONAL)(IN RELATION TO UNDERLYING SYSTEMIC CONDITION).

COSMETIC URGENCY-AESTHETICS CAN BE CONSIDERED AFTER A WHILE.

 

Detailed explanation:

FUNCTIONAL EMERGENCY:-

So,some emergencies to be entertained immediately with cold compression,medication to suppress pain,or in case tooth has popped out of the socket, preserve it in the container containing milk etc.

 

COSMETIC (AESTHETIC ) URGENCY :-

COSMETIC ISSUES CAN BE DEALT LATER NOT CONSIDERED AN EMERGENCY BUT AN URGENCY- CAUSING DISCOMFORT PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY  IN ANYWAY AND COMPROMISING WITH THE AESTHETICS. 

Different treatment modalities are available for different issues related to the tooth .

RCT(ROOT CANAL TREATMENT) IN RELATION TO ABSCESS/INFECTION OF THE ROOT APEX.

TOOTH CONTOURING IRT CHIPPED/ CRACKED TOOTH WITH  IRREGULAR SHARP MARGINS CAUSING LACERATION OF THE SOFT TISSUES.

SYSTEMIC ILLNESS OR CHRONIC MEDICATION TO BE STRICRLY CONSIDERED WITH PROPER MEDICAL /DENTAL HISTORY.

(CHECK FOR THE UNDERLYING BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS IN CASE OF DIABETIC PATIENTS AND ALSO TO RULE OUT ANY UNDERLYING DISORDER AFFECTING THE MOUTH PASSIVELY.)

MISSING OE LOOSE (DISPLACED RESTORATION) OR PROSTHESIS - FIX THE REMOVABLE OR FIXED APPLIANCE-Loose caps / loose fillings OR THE FAULTY ₩RESTORATION (FILLING) TO BE REPLACED IN AN ORGANIZED MANNER COMPLETELY.

Dealing with the DENTAL EMERGENCY QUICKLY WILL HELP IN DEALING WITH MANY ISSUES WITH A POSITIVE OUTCOME. 

Save your teeth- without much delay ,going in for a procedure required in order to if their is any chance of loosing the tooth/teeth owing to any reason.

Save pain -owing to severity of the infection in case being knocked out tooth or teeth, inflammation or any abscess adjoining the root apex or the surrounding structures

Reduce the risk of infection- 

owing to traumatic injuries, so that the spread of infection can be curtailed well on time without systemic body involvement posing a greater risk sometimes can be life-threatening if not entertained well on time.

Oral -facial pain-MUSCULAR PAIN(can be Temporomandibular joint pain,myofacial pain(neuromuscular pain like facial palsy  myofacial syndromes,muscular pain of the facial muscles including neck and face).

 Oral Bleeding:-

Bleeding and swollen  gums-GINGIVITIS or advanced PERIODONTITIS due to the underlying sugar levels (DIABETIC PATIENTS).

Traumatic injuries like sport injuries causing jaw fracture or accidental cause leading to cuts or soft tissue lacerations etc.

Tooth anomalies or tooth/teeth abnormalities or DETIORATION:-

Decay /caries,structural abnormalities, tooth /teeth wear and tear owing to acid reflux(Digestive issues).

 

CANCEROUS LESIONS OR LUMPS TO BE RULED OUT:-/PRECANCEROUS GROWTH:-

Oral cancer can also be in its initial changes starting as as red or white spot expressing as a hard or a lump tissue, numb to touch or with mild pain. It can also be felt as lesions or lumps in the cheeks,neck or mouth.

ANXIETY/STRESS:-

Another cause can be ANXIETY (MENTAL STRESS) can cause myofacial pain which can be express as reffered pain causing enormous discomfort.It can be teeth grinding (BRUXISM) giving you discomfort the next day hampering your lifestyle. 

ORAL PAIN AND DISCOMFORT IN LIEU OF UNDERLYING SYSTEMIC EXPRESSION:-soft tissue pain and hard tissues structure of the face ,mouth and neck gets involved due to underlying cardiac disorder/respiratory/endocrinal/digestive  etc.

Go in for HEALTHY NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS GIVING YOU BENEFIT AND NOT GETTING INTO TROUBLE. 

KINDLY BE CAREFUL WITH THE DIET CAUSING TOOTH WEAR.( LET US BE DIETRY CONSCIOUS).

AVOID USING TEETH:-

Do not use the teeth for unusual procedures  to cut or open items that can cause big harm to the teeth that will surely lead to reconstruction of the natural teeth with the artificial prosthesis.
